Every notable career starts somewhere, and for Todd Richter, it started in the classroom. His academic path, which led from Virginia to Indiana, built the analytical foundation that would later make him one of Wall Street’s most respected voices in healthcare finance.
The College of William and Mary
Richter earned his undergraduate degree from the College of William and Mary, graduating with the Class of 1979. The experience gave him analytical tools he would lean on for decades. It also set him on a course toward business and finance.
The Kelley School Chapter
Eager to deepen his expertise, Richter enrolled at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business and completed his MBA in 1981. There he sharpened his skills and prepared for a future in financial services. The timing proved ideal. Soon after graduating, he began an 18-year run at Morgan Stanley, working in the healthcare services equity research division.
From Student to Industry Leader
That early momentum carried through the decades. After Morgan Stanley, Richter joined Bank of America in 1999, where he is a managing director in the global healthcare investment banking group. Along the way, he has been named an All-American Analyst 17 times and recognized as an All-Star Analyst by the Wall Street Journal.
Repaying a Debt of Gratitude
Richter has never lost sight of the schools that shaped him. For Indiana University, he created the Todd Richter Fund with a $5 million estate commitment. The fund supports the Graduate Finance Department, the Dean’s office, graduate fellowships, and two professorships focused on securities analysis, with extra resources split equally among those four areas. The gift is meant to give tomorrow’s students the same kind of launchpad he enjoyed.
A Lesson for Aspiring Professionals
The story of Todd Richter carries a simple message for anyone weighing their educational options. Strong schools, serious study, and a willingness to keep learning can open doors that last an entire career. It also reminds us that the best way to honor a good education is to make sure others can have one too.
